Call for Applications - Editor, Scientia Canadensis

The Canadian Science and Technology Historical Association / Association pour l'histoire de la science et de la technologie seeks applicants for the position of Editor of the journal Scientia Canadensis beginning with the 2011 issues. The term is typically for five years and is a volunteer position.
Scope of the Journal: Scientia Canadensis, CSTHA/AHSTC's official journal, is devoted to the history of science, technology, and medicine in Canada. A scholarly, refereed journal since 1981, it includes specialized articles written by experts, notes about current research, critical book reviews, and bibliographies. In 2009, the journal became available online through Érudit (http://www.erudit.org/revue/scientia). Beginning in 2011, a new position of Managing Director of Scientia Canadensis will be held by Dr. Stéphane Castonguay (currently Editor), who will be responsible for the print and digital production of the journal.
Qualifications: recognized expertise in the history of science, technology or medicine in Canada; managerial, organizational, editorial, and computer skills to oversee the editorial cycle, meet deadlines, and work with the Managing Director; a compelling vision for the future of the journal and the fields of studies represented in the journal; the ability to attract established and new scholars to publish in the journal; tact in communicating with authors; membership in CSTHA/AHSTC; and institutional support for the duration of the appointment.
Major responsibilities: In general, the editor is responsible for the intellectual content, quality, and timeliness of the journal issues as well as the overall success of the journal. Specific duties may include but not be limited to: providing a clear vision for the direction of the journal, soliciting high-quality manuscripts from potential authors, selecting a sufficient pool of competent peer-reviewers and managing the peer review process of manuscripts, deciding which manuscripts to publish, assisting authors in seeing their manuscripts to publication, working with the Managing Director to ensure timely publication, recommending to the CSTHA / AHSTC executive the appointment of an active Advisory Board to provide advice and counsel, representing the journal in outside venues and conferences.
Search procedure: Applications will be reviewed by the CSTHA/AHSTC Executive Committee, in consultation with the Executive, following the submission deadline. An application should be no more than five pages (not including the cv) and include: a) cover letter, which includes the applicant's name, affiliation, and other relevant information, and evidence of the applicant's ability and experience; b) vision statement of no more than two pages, which outlines the applicant's perspective on challenges and opportunities; future plans for the journal; expected tasks and objective milestones; etc. c) statement of institutional support. Candidates should address the feasibility of serving as editor in light of the institutional resources likely to be available CSTHA/AHSTC does not pay for office space, clerical assistance, or release time; and d) curriculum vitae. The cv should include publications and any editorial experience.

Connected Understanding
Call for Papers Including Works-in-Progress

The Canadian Science and Technology Historical Association (CSTHA) will hold a half-day conference on Saturday, May 29, 2010 during the annual Congress on the Humanities and Social Sciences, hosted by Concordia University, Montreal. The theme of the Congress is "Connected Understanding."
The CSTHA Conference Program Committee invites papers, including Works-in-Progress, on general subjects relating to the history of science, technology, and medicine in Canada including papers relating to the scientific and technological aspects of Canadian environmental history.
The Conference Program Committee welcomes contributions in a wide range research fields such as: traditional biography and institutional history; the history of technical and scientific education; women in science and technology; science and technology in pre-industrial Canadian history; issues in government related science; and science in industry, among others. Proposals for a themed session of two or three papers will be welcomed, and in such cases, a proposal should include a description of the session's theme and describe how the various papers contribute to the session (maximum 300 words).
Paper proposals for individual presentations or for theme sessions must include a title, a summary (75 to 100 words) and a short résumé of each presenter. Proposals for presentations, whether formal papers or informal reports on work in progress, should be submitted by March 31, 2010 to:

History
Founded in 1980, the Canadian Science and Technology
Historical Association (CSTHA) is a national society devoted to the
study of the history of Canadian science and technology. Our primary
mission is to make our scientific and technical history better known
and to make this subject an important element in Canadian
historiography. We have been a member of the Canadian Federation for the
Humanities and Social Sciences since 2003. The Association's
archives are held by York
University Archives.
Objectives
To reach these
objectives, the CSTHA has several mandates:
